President Obama recently announced that he will be creating the worlds largest marine sanctuary to protect ecosystems in the south-central Pacific Ocean. As he said at a White House event “Growing up in Hawaii, I learned early to appreciate the beauty and power of the ocean, and like Presidents Clinton and Bush before me, I’m going to use my authority as president to protect some of our most precious marine landscapes, just like we do for mountains and rivers and forests.” The details of the plan have not yet been figured out, and the President will meet with various officials from environmental organizations and the fishing industry in the coming weeks to finalize the plan. Consider writing to a local official and encouraging them to set up further protections to match those of the President. Lets keep the momentum going!
